Strategy: BRN Requirements for Faculty

Target audience: Deans, Directors and Assistant Directors of Nursing Programs

Purpose: To assist new deans, directors, assistant directors in the hiring process by providing the resource for BRN requirements for various positions in the nursing department.

Process:  

  • Locate BRN Regulations for Faculty in California Code of Regulations
    • Title 16. Professional and Vocational Regulations
    • Division 14. Board of Registered Nursing
    • Article 3. Schools of Nursing
    • Section 1425.  Faculty Qualifications and Changes
    • Website: see below for link
  • Identify Faculty Qualifications per BRN Regulation
    • A nurse faculty member shall meet the following requirements:
      • A valid, active license issued by the board.
      •  A Master’s or higher degree from an accredited college of university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration.
      • At least one year’s experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
      • Completion of at least one year’s experience teaching courses related to nursing or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.
    • An Assistant Instructor shall have:
      • A valid, active license issued by the board
      • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college which includes course work in nursing, or in natural, behavioral or social sciences relevant to nursing practice.
      • At least one year’s continuous, full-time experience in direct patient care as a registered nurse.
    • A Clinical Teaching Assistant shall have:
      • A valid, active license issued by the board
      • At least one year’s experience within the previous five years, as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
  • Identify Additional College Hiring Requirements
    • Not: The Nurse Faculty member as listed above refers to both full time and part-time/adjunct faculty. The Assistant Instructor above should not be confused with part-time/adjunct faculty.  The Assistant Instructor may be used in a skills lab or clinical setting under the direction of the Nurse Faculty member. The Clinical Teaching Assistant also functions under the direction of a Nurse Faculty member.
    • Minimum AS degree with 1 year direct patient care experience in the acute care setting per BRN requirements
    • Minimum AS degree with 6 years work experience per community college requirements
